Valente Rodriguez, and Writer, Jojo Henrickson to Speak at McAllen Art and Film Festival

Posted: October 04, 2008

During the second annual McAllen Art & Film Festival, special guest speakers include noted actor and Edcouch native, Valente Rodriguez and writer/actor Jojo Henrickson of McAllen. Valente Rodriguez is a graduate of the University of Texas-Pan American and has starred in several films and TV series including George Lopez. Jojo Henrickson, whose family still resides in McAllen, is the writer of Ladrón que Roba a Ladrón, a film that hosted one of their world premieres at McAllen's Cine el Rey Theatre last August. These and other guest filmmakers will participate in a panel discussion about the trials and successes of working in the film industry. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions and will allow time for the audience to interact. The McAllen Art & Film Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday October 4th and 5th.

"Having Valente and Jojo visit us for the film festival is a great honor. Both are very dedicated to helping young actors and filmmakers understand the world in which they make their career. Many of us often wonder, but very rarely ask: 'how can I break into Hollywood?' This is the opportunity to find out," said Annabell Cortina, Director of Special Events & Media for the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. "The panel discussion is a great way for the audience to interact with our special guests and find out what it takes to work in the film industry or the challenges of creating a film. Not only will this information be interesting, but it also helps the audience realize the great lengths one has to go through in order to be successful the industry," said Cortina.

The McAllen Art & Film Festival is hosted by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce in association with PalmFest. The Film Festival is a competitive film festival created to pay tribute to the art of film and its makers featuring independent films from all over the country. In seeking new ideas, the Festival provides the community opportunities to discover original thoughts and unique perspectives from around the world through visual images.

The Film Festival committee is continually looking for filmmakers who are interested in submitting their films for review. Entry forms are still being accepted until August 29th. Filmmakers of all ages are encouraged to submit works for consideration into this year's event. For entry forms and requirements, please email acortina@mcallencvb.com.

The McAllen Art & Film Festival is free and open to the public Saturday, October 4th and Sunday, October 5th. For more information, please contact Annabell Cortina at acortina@mcallencvb.com or 682-2871.
